Things To Do In Laura

The district of Laura is Quinkan Country. This land extends to the coastline of Princess Charlotte Bay. Split Rock is the most frequently visited attraction by tourists in the Laura area, although there are hundreds of painter rock shelters worth seeing throughout the district.

Real Australian wildlife covers Laura, with swarms of different species of bird life and mammals. The climate is perfect in June (North Queensland's winter) as daily temperatures and rainfall are traditionally low. Because of this, lizards, snakes and spiders are rarely seen around this time.

Laura is the home to many Aboriginal art gallery sites, however only a few of these are open to the public and only then accessible for viewing after formal application has be submitted to the Aboriginal ranger at Laura.

We highly recommend a visit to the Quinkan & Regional Cultural Centre, a world-class Interpretation Centre of Aboriginal Culture and the European heritage of Cape York (opened from 8.30am until 5.00pm every day over the Festival). Tours of the famous Quinkan Rock Art sites can also be booked through the Quinkan Centre.

While in Laura:

• Explore the Quinkan Centre. Come in and learn about the heritage and the Culture of Quinkan Country; including aboriginal culture, rock art, the mining era, local celebrations and more.
• Inspect World Renowned Rock Art Sites. Book a guided tour at the Quinkan Centre to a variety of sites with a range of accessibility.
• Discover Laura by foot. The Laura Heritage Trail starts at the centre of the town opposite the pub. See relics of the gold and railway era along the walk, and even experience the confinement of an early police lockup and the historic railway bridge.
• Head into the natural wonder of Lakefield National Park. Queensland's second largest national park's entrance is just 27 km down the road.
• Meet the locals at the Laura Races and Rodeo on the following weekend. This enjoyable weekend of camping and entertainment is usually held on the last weekend in June. Contact the Centre for dates and further details.
